Menthol cigarettes can be prohibited in Latvia
Cabinet Council has supported introduction of amendments to Directive about tobacco products author of which is European Commission. According to this Directive, from now on will be prohibited tobacco and cigarettes that have characteristic odor, such as menthol, vanilla and other. These are mainly, slims cigarettes.
In Ministry of Health have mentioned that namely these cigarettes cause dependence among young girls, as it seems to them that they may become slender if smoking such cigarettes.
Besides, according to Directive, warnings about smoking harm will have to be placed on both sides of the pack; their surface should be not less than 75 % of the pack.
Now process of discussing the Directive is on initial stage and to start its' implementation couple of years will be needed.
This Directive is priority of Ireland that has presidency in EU. As compared to Latvia many EU countries haven't decided on their position as of yet. There is possibility that they will not manage to implement Directive so quickly, even more work will need to make Latvia that will have presidency in the first half of 2015.
