Scientists have invented vaccine against smoking
Some day smokers, after making vaccination against nicotine dependence will not be able to get pleasure from harmful habit anymore. Scientists of Weill Cornell Medical College have declared this, BBC informs. Specialists have developed vaccine with help of which in human body are generated anti-bodies that don't allow nicotine penetrating the brain.
Tests on mice have shown that level of nicotine in the brain was lowered by 85 % after vaccination. However before testing this vaccine on people scientists plan to make additional research that, most likely, will take not one year.
Head of this work professor Ronald Crystal is sure in immunological efficacy and declares that it has great opportunities. Earlier has been already developed vaccine against smoking, the essence of which consists in attempt of "teaching" immune system to generate anti-bodies that are bind to nicotine. However, the problem consisted in getting the necessary quantity of anti-bodies. Scientists of Weill Cornell Medical College solved this problem otherwise and addressed to gene therapy.
According to their words, genetically modified virus that contains instructions of nicotine anti-bodies generation infects liver. As result this organ turned into a sort of "plant" that produces anti-bodies. Experts have compared nicotine concentration in brain of mice that were made injection with rodents that haven't got vaccination. It appeared that vaccinated mice had nicotine level that was lowered by 85 %. It is not known yet if such effect will be noticed among people who, as it is known, apart from physical dependence feel psychological dependence as well.
"We hope a lot that such vaccine will help millions smokers who tried to quit smoking after trying all existing methods, but their efforts were in vain as dependence was to high", - comments R. Crystal. According to his words his team still has to find out if this product is sage for people.
Professor in Genetics of University of Kent Darren Griffin has named research results "impressive and intriguing" but he has also marked that there are a lot of questions that require decision. In case of successful vaccine test results can also appear question of vaccinating people in childhood.
This research of scientists was published in Science Translational Medicine magazine.
According to statistics number of adult smokers is 26 % in China and 16 % in USA.
