How to choose a lighter? Part 1

Assortment of lighters that are manufactured is large, it mainly concerns their appearance. Materials, body, form of lighters are most unpredictable.

Operating principle

Lighters vary, first of all, in operating principle and their internal content.

1. Petrol lighters are firm and durable. Usually they are sold empty and fuel should be bought separately, attentively following fueling instructions. All petrol lighters have common operating principle - they consist of capacity for petrol that is filled with special cotton-wool and also wheel of ignition device with flint and wick. In petrol lighters inflammation takes place owing to friction on flint of wheel gear that is why durability and high reliability are advantage of such lighters.

2. Gas lighters. As to the lighting arrangement gas lighters are divided into piezo, flint and with electronic system of inflammation.

Flint gas lighters operate on the principle of petrol lighters. Such lighters are durable. The disadvantage is that from time to time flint should be changed.

In piezo lighters for lighting-up is used piezo-element. Inflammation takes place by action of piezo-element and spark appearance between its wire and spreader on the end of upper valve. Spreader furthers appearance of gas-air mixture that ensures lighting. In no case spreader should be touched as lighter can break. These lighters are very durable.

In the lighter with electronic scheme of inflammation take place practically the same processes as in the lighter with piezo-element. These lighters work when pressing the button and are battery operated; voltage is transformed to necessary extent by electronic scheme. These are lighters are more easy to use.

As to flame type lighter with electronic scheme are divided into: usual and with turbocharging.

In usual lighters gas goes out through spreader from top valve with small speed, on its going out it mixes with air.

In turbocharging lighter gas first goes through special wall through very small hole in the turbine and at the same time gas sharply increases speed. Then through side holes air is pulled and gets under strong pressure in the flame generator in the upper turbine part. Generator gives the flame necessary form. Under the turbine in some turbo lighters is set spiral made of refractory metal that furthers stronger wind resistance. Spiral becomes hot thanks to thermal inertia and doesn't give the flame go out even in a strong wind. In a bad weather it is better you use namely these lighters.

Note! It is not prohibited to allow getting inside the lighter dirt, humidity and dust. It is better not to touch spreader or turbine as it may disturb lighter's work.
