Historical versions of hookah appearance. Part 1.
This unique device for smoking has so many names... Some call it hookah, nargile, water pipe, kalian, sheesha or shisha. "Hookah" ("nargile", as just this name is used in the Middle East) is standard method of smoking in the Middle East during few centuries now. Hookah smoking is quite usual thing in restaurants and coffee shops in the Middle East. This unique way of smoking quickly becomes popular all over the world. Many people prefer "hookah" (nargile) instead of cigarettes' and cigars' smoking thanks to cleared from tar, aromatic, sweet-scented tasty fume.

There are few versions of hookah appearance.

Indian version. Hookah appeared in India and quickly has spread through Persia in Middle East countries, Eastern Asia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Northern and Eastern Africa and on whole Ottoman Empire territory. Hookah has its own name in every country - approximately 40 and all they have Persian origin. Hindus have used hookah as instrument to get strong anesthetic as they used instead of tobacco hashish with admixture of other medical plants and spices. They used tar that was received as results of combustion of such plants mixture. That times hookah looked like coco nut from Narcil palm that grows in India. The inside pulp was removed from nut, two holes were made, in one of them was inserted hollow straw but mixture of plants was placed inside. It is first and the easiest form of modern hookah.

Just with palm name Narcil is connected modern name Narghile (Hookah). Afterwards this device has reached Egypt with different routs where its appearance was changed a little. For example, flask was made not from nut but from hollow pumpkin. Although Narcil name was still used, but due to power of language differences and sounds pronounces it has changed to Narghile or Nargile. Persians have learnt this device and fall in love in it, adding in it a lot of changes and additional parts. Flask, for which coco nut or pumpkin was used, started to be produced of porcelain; straw was substituted with flexible tubing made of snake's sinew or skin that was softer and more practical and the most important thing - durable. They named this part of hookah - marpic, what from Persian language means "snaky knot". This years tobacco was discovered and Persians begun to experiment with it, with this purpose they started to modernize hookah and have invented tray, intended for tobacco that was fastened above the flask. Trays were made of bronze what allowed to use them during long period of time. Tray was named "ser", what means "head". Persians used tobacco type known as tumbeki. Since then Arab tribes of Arabia have learnt hookah and solidly entered in their life.
